When Irish author Colm Toíbín released ‘Brooklyn’ to acclaim in 2009, it was only a matter of time that it was given a cinematic adaptation.

Six years later, fellow author Nick Hornby has taken the novel and used it as the basis for his adapted screenplay of the same name, which is directed for the screen by Irish filmmaker John Crowley, whose previous films include the gentle Michael Caine drama Is Anybody There? (2008).

Set in the early 1950s, the film sees Academy Award nominee Saoirse Ronan starring Eilis, a young Irish woman who moves from her small town in Ireland to Brooklyn, New York, in the hope of finding work and love. She soon finds both and quickly falls for the Italian-American Tony (Emory Cohen), yet when a family tragedy strikes, Eilis must return home where she meets the eligible Jim (Domhnall Gleeson), who begins to court her. As she repeatedly postpones her return to America, Eilis finds herself confronting a terrible dilemma – a heart-breaking choice between two men and two countries.

Featuring outstanding performances from Jim Broadbent, Julie Walters and Emily Bett Rickards, Brooklyn is a faithful adaptation of Toíbín’s novel – a true romantic-drama in the classic sense.
